~Summer Crafting Challenge with Jo-Ann~

Today I’m sharing my creation from the “Cape Discovery” summer crafting challenge with Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores. I was given the choice of 72 crafts that were featured in their spring catalog. I decided to do a ribbon cork board.

Here’s a side-by-side of their ribbon cork board and mine…

The ribbon cork board by Jo-Ann’s has a great beach theme. I love how they used two different ribbons and their seaside accents are great! I chose to do a summer gardening theme for my board.

Supplies:

16×20, Pre-framed Bulletin Cork board

Ribbon

Burlap

Glue

Decorative Items

Paint

Directions:

To begin, I cut two 28″ pieces of ribbon. These each go diagonally, corner to corner, on the board. The rest of the strips were cut to fit, based on their position and spacing.

I hot glued the ribbon at the edge of the cork board and using a sharp edge, I pushed the end of the ribbon under the frame.

To create “flowers” I used strips of burlap. Each strip was about 3″ wide.

Each strip of burlap was folded and gathered, creating a round type of blossom. Once the flower was formed, I used a needle and thread to secure the shape.

Then each blossom was hot glued to the cork board.

Next, I used a cut strip of a bamboo place mat to add my version of a picket fence to the bottom of the cork board.

I then used some craft paint in Raspberry to paint the tip of the flowers and Silver Metallic to paint the frame.

This ribbon cork board is a great kid friendly craft, whether you do the seaside or the gardening version. You can get as creative as you want and create your own special ribbon cork board.

Summer Burlap Wreath

Sometimes we need a little direction…

Directions to the beach are the best kind!

This week I participated in a Google+ Hangout on Air Wreath Series with some other great bloggers. We each were given a Styrofoam Brand Wreath form from Floracraft. They asked us to create a wreath of our choice. I decided to create a summer burlap wreath. When I think of summer, I think of the beach. I wanted to create a fun, easy wreath that leads to the rest and relaxation found at one of my favorite places!

This Styrofoam Brand form was great to work with because of its thickness and texture.

For this wreath craft, I chose to use burlap strips. I did not bother to measure the strips because I wanted it to be easy and carefree…just like the beach…

Because of the texture and thickness of the form, it was so easy to simply use stick pins to attach the burlap to the wreath. The strips need to just be wrapped around the form.

Be sure to use the stick pins on the back of the wreath. It ensures they will not be seen once the wreath is hung on the wall or door.

After I had the form wrapped, I decided to create a beach sign to go with it. I hot glued 3 wood shims together. I specifically chose shims that were “rough.” I wanted the sign to have a worn, weathered look.

To create the letters, I printed “Beach” from Microsoft Word and then traced the letters on the wood with a ball point pen. This technique leaves an indention in the wood.

Then using a small brush I painted within the letter outlines. I used DecoArt acrylic craft paint in “Indian Turquoise” for the letters and “White Wash” for the arrow.

Finally, I used a dry brush technique to add a little more paint to add to the weathered look. I simply dipped my brush into the paint, wiped off any excess paint and then brushed the entire sign.

To attach it to the wreath form, I hot glued twine to the back of the sign and secured it to the back of the form with a stick pin.

This Styrofoam Brand Wreath form is great! I loved that I could use stick pins instead of glue or adhesive. It made this project completely interchangeable! The sign can be removed and changed. I can also remove the burlap and replace it with other fabric or material. The form is completely re-usable!

Beyond the Grill with an Outdoor Space

4. Don’t forget the accessories! I love a great outdoor clock! Look at fun side chairs, candle holders, lanterns and other decorative accessories that you can use to decorate your outdoor space just as you would your home indoors.

Twilight Theme Graduation Party Ideas

~She Did It!~

I feel like I’ve been missing in action from my blog the last several days. I’ve been so busy with my daughter’s upcoming graduation. This past weekend we had a very intimate graduation party with family and friends who have known her forever. I wanted it be a celebration of her life, accomplishments and the wonderful young woman that she’s become. It was a wonderful party and I’m excited to share some of the details of her Twilight Theme Graduation Party.

When I began planning the party, my first thought was the theme. My daughter is a lover of books. She has many favorites, but her love affair with books began with Twilight. The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer has been such a big part of her life. First it was the books and then it was the movies. I didn’t want to decorate with vampires and blood, so I decided to focus on the Twilight books themselves.

I hit gold at a local discount book store. They had every book from the Twilight series for $1.00 each! I bought 17! The cashier thought I was a little odd, but I quickly explained my idea. Most of the books would be torn apart, so that I could use the pages themselves. I wanted the party decorations to correlate with each book from the series.

We had her party at a local restaurant. It was great because the only thing I had to worry about was the decorations, specifically the table decor. We had 5 tables. I created 3 different centerpieces, using 2 different designs on four tables and a single design on the fifth.

Check out my centerpiece that represents the cover from the Twilight book…

Two tables had this centerpiece. They were made from a foam cooler from the Dollar Tree. I turned the cooler upside down and hot glued rolled pages around the edges. I love that all the pages are from the Twilight book.

The cooler was somewhat tiered, so once the pages were attached, they had a tiered appearance. I added spanish moss along the tiered edge and the top of the centerpiece. I added some wisteria, which was used in the wedding scene in the Breaking Dawn movie.

Obviously, the apple comes straight from the Twilight cover. Don’t forget that it’s a graduation party…I had to add the 2013!

We also had two of this centerpiece that comes straight from the cover of Breaking Dawn…

This was a very easy centerpiece! The base is the top of the cooler with spanish moss hot glued around the edges and greenery attached to the bottom. I stacked the four books of the series on top and tied them with red ribbon.

The red ribbon represents the cover of the Eclipse book. The white Queen and red Pawn chess pieces represent the cover of Breaking Dawn. I found the chess pieces at Hobby Lobby.

For the fifth table, I created this centerpiece that represents the cover of Eclipse and New Moon…

The base of this centerpiece was made using two of the cooler lids. I used moss and greenery again. I used a large 2013 sign and wove the red ribbon throughout the centerpiece. I could not find the flower from the New Moon cover so I bought white tulips and dipped them into red paint.

I also rolled a couple of pages from the book and tied red ribbon around them. They give the appearance of a diploma.

Instead of one large cake, I chose to use 4 round cakes. Following my theme, each cake represents each Twilight book. Plus, each cake was a different flavor! We had chocolate (her favorite), white chocolate raspberry (my favorite), white and key lime! YUM!

The cakes were made by a local bakery that makes AMAZING cakes! They did a beautiful job with the fondant decorative touches!

I love to use photo collages at graduation parties. Guests love to look at pictures from the graduate’s childhood and pictures with family and friends. I wanted something different for her party. I found wooden letters that spell her name and used Mod Podge to decorate them with photos of my daughter through the years. The best thing about it is that she can take the letters with her and use them to decorate her dorm room.

As a little decorative touch and a bit of the Breaking Dawn movie, I added little framed snippets of the Twilight book. If you’ve seen Breaking Dawn Part 2, you’ll notice in the closing credits, that they highlight the name Bella, Edward and Jacob. I did my version of that…

The party was a great success and she loved it! I’m excited for her and the opportunities that are headed her way, but I’m also a little apprehensive about my little girl entering that next stage of her life. A little sad….a little melancholy…but happy for her!

I enjoyed reading their latest issue. It’s their very own “ode to summer!”

One particular article is entitled Summer Soiree. Lauren Colley, from Lavender Gray Events, shared her tips and ideas for creating a memorable evening outdoors with friends.

Her table setting is absolutely gorgeous. She shares how effortless it really is to create an inviting space for your guests. She also provides great tips on how to make your guests feel welcome. She suggests giving them a gift to take home. She even suggests teaching them something! How much fun is that?!

Another great section of deliberateLIFE focuses on our daily life. I loved the information about foods that are available during the summer months. There’s a chart listing delicious foods like asparagus, strawberries and summer squash. They also included tips on how to decide if the produce is fresh, tips on how to grow them and recipes too!

One of their recipes is for granola from Boot and Shoe Service. It’s an Oakland cafe that uses fresh, organic foods in their recipes. (If you have trouble reading it, let me know and I can send you a better copy.) It looks delicious!

deliberateLIFE is a gorgeous digital magazine that reminds us that we should slow down, enjoy nature and live a deliberate life. The pictures are beautiful and the articles are well written. Take a peek and see for yourself how to live a deliberate life!

Craft Room Storage Ideas

~Organize Me~

Why do I feel like I am walking around in circles when it comes to finishing my office/craft room???? Right now, I’m trying to actually USE the craft room while trying to DECORATE and ORGANIZE it at the same time! I am definitely walking around in circles. It’s almost as if I don’t know where to start. I’m in desperate need of some craft room storage ideas. So I thought I’d gather some inspiration and hopefully get moving in the right direction!

One storage issue I have is where to put my paint. I have so many bottles of craft paint and I really need a great way to organize and store them. This paint storage shelf is amazing! Becky from Infarrantly Creative is so talented. Click over and check out the secret behind the shelf! There’s more than what meets the eye…

I want to be organized, but I also want it to be stylish and beautiful. This tiered wire basket idea found at Country Living is a great idea for easy storage. Plus it’s a cool decorative item for the space. It would look lovely on a craft table or a desk.

The complete organization of this craft room is awesome! This large pegboard from Honey Bear Lane takes care of a multitude of storage and organization issues and makes it look good while doing it! It gets the supplies off the table or desk and puts them within arm’s reach. Brilliant!

I REALLY WANT THIS CRAFT TABLE!!! I definitely think a craft table like this one from Being Brook is an essential. It is bar height which is great for working on crafts and projects. You can sit or stand without hurting your back. The storage provided by the shelves and cubbies are perfect too. Brook did a beautiful job on this table, using the plans from Ana White.

These ideas are just what I needed to get some inspiration flowing! My problem is that I want it done…right now! But, I know I need to stop and get my thoughts organized before I can get my craft room organized…

Graduation time is among us, which means invitations, caps, gowns, gifts and parties. At the moment I’m in full gear with my daughter’s upcoming graduation but I wanted to share a graduation party that I threw for my son a couple of years ago.

Whenever I plan a party, I always try to plan a theme based on the guest of honor’s likes, hobbies, career, etc. I’m a “party theme” kind of girl. So when it came time to plan my son’s party, it was a no-brainer…he wanted to study film. His life has revolved around movies since he was 12.

Enter “The Graduate”….

Each table was decorated with a movie clapboard, film cases, filmstrip photo frames, movie and graduation confetti and director megaphones. (I removed his name from the clapboards and his face from the pictures. I don’t like to put too much out there!)

Instead of place cards, I created a table game using movie quotes. On the outside of each card was a movie quote. On the inside was the name of the movie. Guests could quiz each other on their movie knowledge. Can you guess what movie this quote is from?

“What momma don’t know won’t hurt her.” -The Waterboy

I loved the cake. We have an amazing local bakery that does unbelievable cakes! They are gorgeous and delicious! I also ordered personalized napkins with his name and Class of 2011 on them.

The food, cake and gift tables were decorated with red velvet swags. We also had a red carpet for our guests to walk as well as a candy buffet for them to treat themselves to.

(The blue walls of the country club didn’t really go with the red, white and black theme, but I couldn’t ask them to re-paint…it is Kentucky after all…Wildcat blue…)

These great popcorn boxes were the perfect size for guests to get their fill of goodies.

I found various sizes and shapes of glass containers for the candy. I wanted different heights as well, so I used boxes under some red velvet fabric to create risers.

Each treat was given a movie title that somehow represented the type of candy. For example, we had cinnamon disks that we named “Red Heat.” Remember that movie starring Arnold?

He was also in “Twins.” Get it?…M&Ms…

What about this one? They’re root beer sticks. I thought about how the candy had “beer” in the name…so I went with “The Hangover.” Was I stretching it?

Next we have “Twister” for Twizzlers and “Tootsie” for Tootsie Rolls. Of course, I don’t think he’d even seen Tootsie. That’s a bit before his time!

I loved “The Cat in the Hat.” It was a fun movie and Kit Kats are so good!

And a candy buffet would not be complete without good old Hershey’s chocolate! A little salute to “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.“

Don’t forget to get a Hershey’s Kiss and let’s call it “Love Actually.” I loved when Hugh Grant danced down the hallway!

I made two sucker holders out of styrofoam cones that I hot glued to candle holders. I spray painted them red and filled them with black and white striped suckers with personalized labels on them. Hence, one represented the movie, “Stripes.” The other one was entitled “Sucker Punch.“

All of the jars and containers on the candy buffet were decorated with simple black and white ribbon and round labels that were personalized using the computer.

When planning a movie themed party, just remember to add red velvet swags, a red carpet, movie reel cases, megaphones, clapboards and movie posters. To easily turn it into a graduation party, add some simple graduation touches like graduation confetti, candy and napkins.

By centering the graduation party around “The Graduate” I was able to get the best of both…a graduation party and a movie party!

It was so much fun to plan this party and he loved it! We were able to celebrate his accomplishment and his dream for the future at the same time!
