The countdown to Halloween has begun. The lurking hour is near. Are you ready? Don’t worry…you can do it. Planning an awesome Halloween party doesn’t have to take weeks and hours of work. There are tons of DIYs and crafts that can be done at the last minute that will make your party amazing.

I’ve teamed up with JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores to share a last minute DIY for the holiday. It’s the perfect Halloween banner for the perfect Halloween party.

Happy Halloween Banner

Every great Halloween party needs a banner to greet the guests and wish them a Happy Halloween. With that in mind, I headed to my local JoAnn store to gather some supplies; burlap ribbon, wooden letters and shapes, as well as some fun Halloween bats from Martha Stewart.

Last Minute DIY Halloween Banner

My first step was to add some color to the letters with craft paint and paint markers. The paint dries really fast, but if you need the extra time, markers or Sharpies work great on these wooden letters and shapes.

Last Minute DIY Halloween Banner

Guess how I used the skull and witches’ hats?…my O and A’s in Happy Halloween. The little hats make an awesome A and the skull is a great spooky O!

Last Minute DIY Halloween Banner

Once the letters were dry, I added them to the burlap ribbon with hot glue. *Tip: the burlap ribbon is loosely woven, so once you add the glued letter to the burlap, immediately pull the ribbon off the tabletop surface. This will allow the letter to adhere to the ribbon, but keep the ribbon from sticking to the surface.

Once the banners were ready, I needed to figure out a way to hang them on my mirror. My solution was to use basic suction cups with hooks.

Last Minute DIY Halloween Banner

I use them for my Christmas wreaths and they work great on windows and mirrors. I positioned them on the back of the ribbon, behind the letters.

After I hung both banners, I surrounded them with the bats by Martha Stewart, using tape to secure them to the mirror.

This last minute DIY Halloween banner was easy and makes the perfect holiday decor for my mirror and a cool way to welcome party goers into my home. It’s a fun holiday and one of my favorites. You can take a peek at my gallery of Halloween projects for proof!

What Halloween DIYs have you been working on? Be sure to share on social media using #DIY4Halloween. If you need some more ideas, be sure to check out the holiday inspiration over at JoAnn. Their website is full of amazing projects and crafts and it’s not to late to get spooky…

I love Halloween…it’s one of my favorite holidays.  But this year it seems that October has been somewhat chaotic and overwhelming for me.

There’s not a party to go to or even one that my kids will be attending. All the fun seems to have skipped right by my house this year…which makes me feel a little bummed…
But today’s Monday and it’s time to get excited over the amazing stuff that was shared last week! My co-host Karin had the pleasure of choosing this week’s features, so let’s take a peek….

~Ideas for the Laundry Room~

With the holidays right around the corner, I can’t believe I’m actually starting a new room makeover. I must not be thinking straight. Shouldn’t I be thinking of Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas trees?

Perhaps…but I’ve admitted how I get when I get an idea or project on my mind…full force ahead.

Before planning any space, I always try to think about what I want out of it, so my first step was to develop a laundry room inspiration board.

Here’s what I’m thinking…

Laundry Room Inspiration Board

sources: Washer and Dryer, Wall Storage Organizer, Pendant, Laundry Basket, Shelf with Rod, Jars, Ironing Board

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I already have the front loading washer and dryer on pedestals and I want to create a rustic/industrial look in the space. I love the idea of the open shelving and decorative containers for laundry supplies.
For the walls, I’m really thinking of just clean, fresh white walls. With the dark wood tones and black metal, I think white walls would be a great classic look.
Now that I have a plan, it’s go time!
Have you ever tried something new and thought you had it all under control, but you didn’t? It happened to me recently and it had me scrambling to figure out what I did wrong and how I was going to fix it.
The problem is that sometimes I get so excited about a project that I go in with both barrels blazing. If it’s a project requiring me to use a skill or technique that is new to me, then that’s where I get in trouble.  Trust me, I research and study up, but sometimes I think I know what I’m doing when I really don’t…
Such as, my recent board and batten treatment. In the end, it turned out beautiful, but I made some mistakes along the way.
mistake with a miter box
When I started this bathroom makeover, it was the first time I had ever done a board and batten treatment…hung moulding…or used a nail gun. Before I started, I read the manual for my nail gun and researched how-to’s that were shared by other DIYers. I really felt like I had it all under control.
I measured and planned until I was 100% certain about the process. Then I began to cut…
mistake with a miter box
source
Using a standard miter box and hand saw, I started with my chair rail. I measured and had the perfect angle for my cut. Once it was cut, I proudly took my rail into the bathroom and nailed it to the wall.
I was doing good!
Then I cut my second piece of railing. I measured, cut and proudly took the second piece into the bathroom and lined it up with the first piece.
What happened to the corners?
I screwed up!
A little more research and study was in order…and I discovered that I hadn’t considered the “orientation of the wood toward the angle of the cut.” Who knew?! I guess a lot of people do, but since I’m not a seasoned carpenter, that knowledge was not on my radar.
I figured out that I should have placed the wood railing upside down and backwards in the mitre box. (Sorry I don’t have pictures. I was so frustrated at that point, I didn’t feel like taking any!)  But, you can learn a little more about cutting an inside or outside corner here.
If you’d like more information about using a miter box, check out this article from Bob Villa. He can explain the process a lot better than I can, considering I’m still learning…
Luckily, I figured out what I did wrong and fixed it!
mistake with a miter box
The process started out with a mistake, but it turned into a learning experience. Isn’t that the best type of mistake? One that makes us stop and change things.
That’s how we grow and expand our horizons. It’s how we become better…whether it’s simply becoming a better person or becoming better at a skill. Mistakes can be positive, if we learn from them.
BTW, I also wanted to share a few of my favorite blogs…
As I was walking through the house the other day, I noticed that the pillows were everywhere…even turned on their sides.
It drives me crazy! So I took a few moments and plumped my pillows…
Khaki Bar
I have an addiction. Just ask my daughter. She’ll confirm the fact that I am addicted to make-up. I can’t walk by a Sephora without walking in…and I can’t walk in without buying something. It’s a little bit of an issue, because when you buy a lot of makeup, you have to store a lot of makeup. The key is organization!
Makeup Organization -1
For a long time, I kept my makeup in the drawer of my vanity. There were two problems with that set-up. When I sat at the vanity, it was impossible to open the drawer without scooting the stool back, which forced me to stand up to put my makeup on. Also, when the makeup was in the drawer, it would move around whenever the drawer was opened, even with the makeup being stored in drawer organizers. The actual organizers would shift. It just didn’t work.
Makeup Organization
I really wanted to be able to use my vanity. I wanted to sit and apply my makeup. So I went on the hunt for an attractive organizer and found it at HomeGoods.
Makeup Organization
It’s a great divided acrylic organizer that has a spot for everything. It has a slanted design which allows taller items to be placed in the back and smaller things in the front. It also has a removable compartment that is made for lipstick tubes.
Makeup Organization -2
Everything has it’s place and it looks good too! It’s perfect for my makeup organization.
For my larger brushes, I wanted to use a beautiful vase or container, like this gold one I found at Target.
Makeup organziation
The vase itself is a little taller than my brushes, so I added some folded tissue paper to the bottom of the vase to raise the brushes enough to make retrieving them easier.
magazine organization
With my makeup nicely organized, I’m able to find exactly what I need every time I sit down to apply my makeup. The plus is that it looks pretty too! The clear acrylic organizer is attractive and has a spot for everything and the gold vase is an extra touch of organized bling.
One question that I get asked a lot, is “how high should I hang my curtains?” It’s actually a really great question and while I have my opinion on the subject, most of the time it’s a matter of personal preference.
how high should curtains be hung
The way you mount your curtains and how high you mount them can affect the appearance of not only the window itself, but the room in general. You can make your window look taller and wider as well as make the ceiling appear taller, just by determining the best place to hang your curtains.
The general rule is to hang the curtain rod at least 4-6 inches above the window frame, when there is at least 12 inches of space between the frame and ceiling.
100030049.jpg.rendition.largest
source: BHG
Your ceiling height is the first factor you should consider when deciding how high to hang your curtains. If you have tall or cathedral ceilings, you should definitely hang them a minimum of 4-6 inches above the window frame. Obviously, if you have 20 foot ceilings, you do not want to hang them that high! But you also do not want to have tall ceilings and have curtains that look small and diminished in the space.
Sometimes, the windows themselves are tall which usually means there is a small amount of space between the window frame and the ceiling. In that case, you would want to hang them at the ceiling. A tall window should be seen and highlighted. Hanging the curtain above the window will showcase it.
If you have a low ceiling, you should hang the curtains as close to the ceiling or crown molding as possible. This will draw the eye up and create the illusion of taller walls and a larger room.
My personal preference is to hang them as close to the ceiling as possible. It allows more light to come in and visually makes a room appear spacious. Curtains can be focal point of the a room and it’s so important that they enhance the space.
curtains
source: BHG
The curtains in my craft room are hung as high as my slanted ceilings would allow, due to the length of the curtain rod. As you can see, they are hung well above the window frame. By hanging them as high as possible, it draws the eye up and accentuates the slanted ceiling in the room.
how high should curtains be hung
Obviously, the type of curtains you plan to use could also factor into your decision. If you plan on buying ready made curtains, their lengths are usually 84″ and 96″ with some retailers carrying 106″ as well. For example, if your measurements are 100″ from the top of the window to the floor, you could buy ready made curtains at 106″ and mount your rod about 6″ above your window. If you plan on using custom made curtains, then you can determine how high you want the mount and have your curtains made to fit, which is exactly what I did with my craft room curtains.
100033708.jpg.rendition.largest
source: BHG
When determining how high to hang your curtains, take into consideration…
  • Ceiling Height
  • Space Between the Top of the Window and the Ceiling
  • Height of the Window
  • Size of the Room
  • Length of Curtains Available
Curtains, just like every other aspect of home decor, are a personal preference. Yes, there are guidelines that people follow, which help us to understand what enhances our space and what is appealing to the eye. But ultimately, every home is different and you are the one who has to live there…you have to decide what you like… But my standard answer… …hang them as high as they’ll go!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I’d also like to share a few of my favorite bloggers with you today! Are you familiar with them? If not, check them out…I think you’ll love them….

~Pick and Choose~

*This post is sponsored by Wayfair, but all opinions are 100% mine.

When we decorate our homes, we are expressing ourselves. We are showing our style, our likes, our own personal reflection of who we are. Why settle for what everyone has chosen?

Every person is different, so it’s logical that our homes and what we put in them should be different too. One of the best ways to get an individual look, that expresses who you are, is by selecting custom pieces. Which is why I’m so excited to tell you about the new line of custom upholstered furniture from Wayfair.

Wayfair custom upholstery

The line includes sofas, loveseats, sleeper sofas, ottomans and chairs. With several styles to choose from, you should be able to find exactly what you need.

One of my favorite pieces is the Addison Slipper Chair in Bevin Teal. The polyester/linen blend upholstery is a gorgeous, vibrant shade of teal. I love the clean lines and the tapered legs. A set of these chairs would be beautiful at the foot of a bed.

Wayfair Addison Chair

Wayfair has a wonderful selection of styles to choose from, including the Brooke Collection, which has a sofa, loveseat, chair and ottoman. The Brooke collection is also available in 18 different choices of custom upholstery.

Wayfair Custom Upholstery

The Felicity Sofa is a slipcovered sofa, which makes upholstery care easy. I love this neutral upholstery called Bull Natural. A neutral sofa is the perfect foundation for any room. You can add colorful pillows to accent the space.

Wayfair Custom Upholstery

Each style in the Wayfair Custom Upholstery collection is classic, with clean lines. They each have something that makes them special and unique, which makes it easy to find a piece that fits your home.

Enjoy exploring the Wayfair Custom Upholstery Collections and the different fabric choices. If you’re a little torn between colors or just can’t decide your favorite, you can also request sample swatches.

I always love seeing fabric swatches up close and being able to feel the fabric. Here is a sampling of the Upholstery Fabric Swatches I requested…

Swatch Collage

After receiving my swatches, I really liked the look of the Lizzy Graphite and the feel of the Bevin Rain. Each fabric is high quality and the colors are beautiful.

Look at the styles and decide what works best for you…Have fun and express yourself!

Khaki Bar

Making pillows is one of my favorite DIY projects ever. I’ve made quite a few over the years and with each one I learn something new.

I’ve made no-sew pillows, some with cording and some with trim. I’ve also experimented with different types of closures in my pillows; like velcro, zippers and envelope style.

Today I tried something new…I added DIY Jute Tassels to my new pillows.

But let me start at the beginning…

I was invited to participate in a Throw Pillow Tour with some other bloggers. Each one of us received a 16″ x 16″ pillow form and 1 yard of fabric from Online Fabric Store. We were able to choose our fabric and I decided on this gorgeous Waverly Full Circle Tiger Lily Fabric.  I also asked if I could get some trim and they graciously said yes, so I picked the 2″ Jute Brush Fringe.

The reason I chose this particular fabric and trim was because I was in need of two pillows for my black chairs in my master bedroom. Since I have recently added orange and khaki into that room, I knew it would be a perfect fit.

Let’s talk tutorial…

DIY Jute Tassels

I’ll be honest when I say that the tassels were not my intention when I ordered the fabric and trim. My idea was to use the trim…

With my pillow form being 16″ x 16″, I needed a minimum of 64″ of trim to complete the pillow. The problem was that I only had 60″ of trim…plus I wanted to make two pillows.

So I moved on to Plan B, which was to use the trim to create tassels…which I’ve never done…

I cut the trim into 8 pieces that were about 2″ long.

For the strings, I had some heavier jute twine left over from a previous project. I cut it into pieces that were about 3″ long and placed the end of the twine at the center of the trim. I sewed the twine to the jute trim, going back and forth over the section. If I had it to do over, I would create a longer string than 3″. The end of the string ends up inside the pillow cover, so it would actually be easier to handle when sewing the tassels to the fabric.

To create the tassel, I rolled the trim and used hot glue to secure it.

Once the tassels were made, it was on to the pillows…

DIY Envelope Throw Pillows

My first step for the pillow was to measure and cut the fabric. The pillow form was 16″ x 16″ and while most people would cut their fabric with an additional inch to allow for seams, I always choose to cut my fabric the exact size as my form. It’s just really a personal preference…I like the pillow form to fill the pillow cover completely.

Therefore, I cut my fabric 16″ x 16″ for the front. For the back, I cut a piece 16″ x 22″. I added an additional 6 inches, because I decided to create an envelope style pillow. The 16″ x 22″ piece was then cut in half, making two 16″ x 11″ pieces.

Next, I created a hem on the two back pieces, on the sides where they would overlap, knowing that those two edges are the only fabric edges that would be seen once the pillow was finished.

Then I constructed the pillow by laying the fabric, “right sides together.”  The back pieces where simply laid atop of each other, lining up with the one front piece.

At this point, I pinned the fabric together and added my tassels. The tassels where inserted at the corners, inside the fabric. With the string of the tassel extending at the corner, I pinned the tassels to the fabric.

Once all the pieces were pinned, I sewed it all together…turned it inside out…inserted the pillow form and done!

Luckily I had a second pillow form on hand, because the 1 yd of fabric was more than enough for two pillows.

Thankfully, I can chalk up another style pillow to my list of favorites. The tassels were really easy to DIY and it’s a style that I’ve always loved.
