DIY Christmas 3D Subway Art

~Christmas Craft Showcase~

Have you made a purchase, not knowing what you’re actually going to do with the product? I have to confess that I do that sometimes. I see something cute and a few ideas run around in my head but honestly I don’t have a definite idea of what I want to do with it…but I know I’ll do something!

This time, I made some Christmas 3D Subway Art!

That’s what happened when I found these cute fabric covered wooden words at Michael’s. They were in the $1.00 bin. They’re so cute who could resist!

Once I got them home, I remembered that I had a wooden frame with some great cut-out designs. It’s been sitting, waiting for the day that it would become spectacular.

My first thought was what to do with the frame. I went back and forth on whether I should paint it or maybe decoupage it with some great paper. But with the cut-out design, I knew it would be too hard to get a good clean-cut of the paper. Finally, I decided that I would use DecoArt Americana black acrylic paint and their Staining and Antiquing Medium.

When you add the staining medium to the paint, it creates a great colored stain for your project. You simply brush the mixture on and then immediately rub it off.

This created a light black stain on the frame, which is perfect for this project. I didn’t want a deep dark black painted frame. I wanted something softer for this art.

Once the frame was dry, I worked on the placement of the words. To attach the words to the frame, I hot glued twine across the back of each word and to the frame itself. I glued twine strands about 2 inches apart, which allowed each letter to be glued to at least 2-3 strands of twine. It works great because the words do not lean forward or move around.

It was destiny that those 5 little $1 words fit perfectly in that frame! I just knew it would look spectacular!

This is really cute, Leslie! I have some of those words, too, from last year, but at the moment I couldn’t tell you where they are! Great job, and thanks for joining us on our craft tour!

Leslie I adore this project! I didn’t even notice that the twine was holding the words on before you pointed it out. 😉 And I know all too well about buying items and not having a clue what you’re going to use them for. Happy to be on this tour with you!
